I've been resisting the urge these past two weeks to just sit down and just sketch my ass off.

The hunger to become a better illustrator is is getting stronger and stronger everyday.

And no, despite my inability to consistently log my entries into my blog, I've been going to at least THREE art sessions every fucking week: the first one is the beginning Life Drawing session, the second, is the Advanced Life Drawing session and the third one is the nightly Wednesday sessions.

Heck, my Art Director (which is the instructor as well) started including me in his class as if I'm enrolled in that subject, hah.

In the Art Institute, there's at least 5 illustration subjects that Animation/Game Arts Student that has to take. The first one is Perspective class, followed by Observational Drawing. And then, we have to finish Life Drawing (which I passed just last quarter). The next art class that I will take this October will be the Anatomy class. And then, the final one is the Advanced Life Drawing class which the Art Director holds no punches when it comes to critiques.

However, after you completed all five art classes, most of the stuff that students will be dealing with will be more on the digital stuff--- it's up to the student if he/she would still want to hone one's skills by sitting in in any of the previous classes which what I'm doing right now.

I know for certain that I will continue doing the traditional method and will pay the same attention in doing the digital stuff like Photoshop, Painter, Maya and the works. The more program that a budding texture artists knows, the better. Same thing applies for the aspiring Concept Artists.

I don't want to be just a "good" artist... I want to be an awesome artiste instead.

Animegacon!

Last Friday during the Game Development class, my classmate Anna asked me:

Anna: "Hey Rich, have you heard of Animegacon?"
Moi: (looking confused)"you mean Anime Vegas?"
Anna: (shakes her head) "nope, it's Animegacon, it's a new Anime convention here in Vegas".

I looked around to see if any of my classmates have heard of this convention... all of them shook their heads.

So I checked their website, and was impressed with the lineup that they have for the panels: Vig Mignogna, Quinton Flynn, Wendee Lee, Jaimie Marchi, Cristina Vee, Lisle Wilkerson, Linda Le and La Carmina.

If you're into Anime/Video Games, you should probably read their names on the credit list if you're watching animes or playing games... heck, you probably heard their voices before and didnt know that was them.

I attended the Sunday (which was the last day) convention and had a blast. The last time I attended an Anime Convention was the AX back in 2006 in Anaheim and I had a great time.

I'll add the pictures this week...

I'm such a procrastinator.

Just when I thought I was about to get over this Midterms and all it's projects, my animation teacher tore me a new one.

Basically, the midterm project that I have was a disaster: it was suppose to be a 4 walk cycles and within 30 frames.

While I was able to do the entire thing, my teacher made me realized that I totally missed putting in-betweens between the uh, in-betweens... teacher was not pleased at all.

So I have to re-do half of the frames to save some time but yea, I pretty lost whatever enthusiasm I had this morning because of this. But, it's a good learning experience nonetheless.

I'm going to upload the video (converted in quicktime) this week.

The last two weeks has been hectic, now I'm catching up in order to make the midterm grade... should be able to finish and be up-to-date at everything by next week.

Anyways,

from the last, last Tuesday's night session (July 24th), with a new model named "M".

Wasn't really feeling well that night and was thinking of leaving early so I can go home and just lie down. I wasn't sick or anything it's just that the events that week pretty much left me emotionally drained. But I resisted the urge to leave so I sucked it up and continued sketching until it was time to go. I'm so glad that I decided to stay that night.

My speed is improving when I do the gestures. Now I need to learn further anatomy and light studies.

Ken and his... EXPLODING BRAIN!!!

This was a 10-minute pencil sketch while we were having our animation class last Saturday. Ken, our animation instructor told us that while us students gets to have a week's worth of vacation after this quarter (which ends in the last week of September), them instructors have to stay a good portion of that week in school so he can "watch his brain explode".

He was just being funny of course, but the second I heard that last line, my hands just started moving and things just seems to just come to life with each stroke. It's like:

Ear: ("heard the exploding brain" line)
Hands: (started sketches Ken's outline)
Brain: "Oooh... make it look like a 1950's Sci-Fi movie poster!"
Everything else: "Fuck yeah! That's a good idea!" (high fives all over)
