Very Interesting...

... I just noticed that the last time I made any update from my blog was the same month of last year, and then the one before that was in March of 2013, heh.

Well, I'm going to start being consistent again just to write my thoughts down since there has been a lot of changes that has happened these past 2 years. I'll start posting more about what happened in the next few weeks.

Well, before I get too comfortable setting my blog and stuff again, I think I'm going to get some sleep instead--- I got work in 9 hours.

Yep, I'm working again... pays decent too. No, it's not a freelance art gig.

Aaaaaand I totally have withdrawn from the Arts Institute for now. So much bullshit has happened. That's a story in itself right there.

The only thing that has been consistent these past two years is that I'm still doing that Wednesday life drawing session. My art life has just started and I'll be fucking damned if I don't give this my all or at least make it work for the next few more years.

More updates to come. :)

Back. Sort of.

It's been a damn year huh?

So many crap has happened the previous year that it threw me off-course. So much shit has happened that I nearly had a nervous breakdown at one point because I'm such a fucking worrywart.

I'm going to start going back doing this blog thing again, not sure how many people are keeping tabs on this blog but whatever... I think this time I'm going to be more honest on what I will post on this art journal of mine. It's a therapy for me to be able to type in what I *really* feel on certain things be it art- or personal- crap.

I still go to AI to hone my skills since I've been out of the loop for quite a while now. I actually started going back to my art (in a more consistent) manner three months ago, at the beginning of this year.

Well, will add more later.

6th Quarter Down, 6-8 Quarters To Go...

Oh man, Im so happy that this quarter is done and over with. I took three project-heavy classes (Beginner After Effects, Digital Video Editing and Advanced Life Drawing) and one liberal study project (English Composition).

It was smooth sailing until I hit a snag on weeks 9 and 10. That's when my sciatic nerve flared up for 11 days which pretty much ruined my plan to finish my final projects well ahead of the schedule so I don't get rushed too much at the end. I guess the changing season from Winter to Spring caused my body to react and man, this is as painful as it got. Painkillers are not as effective and I have to sleep on my sides just to alleviate the pressure on my back. I could only sleep for 2-4 hours and then my back would flare up for hours at end. My little brother thinks that I need to seriously lose a shit load of weight because my belly is pulling my lower back, adding more pressure to it.

Funny thing is that I only experienced this twice in the four years that I was in the navy (which that's the fittest that I got with all the exercise and lifting weights that I did). I'm making a conscious effort to ease off on the food that I usually eat (junk foods being a good chunk of it). Anyways, yea, that wasted two weeks of potential project time.

Well despite that setback, I still did pretty damn well I think. I dont think I can post the videos from my After Effects here, probably screencaps would do.

Here's the final project that I sent for my Advanced Life Drawing:

The entire class LOVED it. I'm happy with it too since it was a fun project to do, specially with an awesome model such as her.

As for my art stuff, I can say that it is still improving, still have shitloads to learn. There are many things that I will be practicing on for the next quarter. One of them is doing speed painting/matte painting on top of the usual anatomy Wednesday night drawing sessions. And then I plan on joining the contest that my Art Director is organizing: a sketchbook battle, 50-pages of more, due at the end of the Mar-May quarter, winner takes the prize. The interest in this contest is high with a few of the AI Alumnis expressing interest. This should be interesting.

Been inactive on this blog...

... but that doesn't mean that I have been slacking off at all. Been working hard at it actually. It's just that I feel like I really don't have anything "new" to post aside from the usual life drawing that I do.

However, I did start working in digital drawings as well. I bought a Cintiq back in December and I've been doing doodles on it. I decided to delve more into it just a month ago since our instructor doesn't mind doing our last few projects on it, so I might as well take it as a sign to seriously check on it.

This was my first attempt working on Cintiq. The lineart is jagged, the colors are flat but heck, I'm proud of it. I used Photoshop and Sketchbook Pro.

A few days after that, I started playing around with different brushes and colors.

Another color study with Barbarians and shit.

"To be, or not to be..."
Was inspired by the Shakespearean play "Hamlet", only using a Sorcerer (though one of my friends insists that it is a Necromancer). I like how this turned out, but the backround, not so much.

"One-winged Angel"
Playing around with colors, getting my lineart smoother and still playing with PS brushes.

Another color/drapery study with robes and armor

Color study using darker skin tones. Still looks flat, ugh.

Wizard study. Resembles Slayn from The Record of Lodoss War. It wasn't intentional though, haha.

I'm still working on my traditional projects. Hmm, might as well post that one too...

It's one of my final projects for my Advanced Life Drawing class. Still on WIP mode but I'm happy with how it turned out. I used Canson paper and used Conte HB. I. LOVE. CONTE.

My second semester as a 2nd-year student began smoothly. Four classes (Advanced Life Drawing, Visual and Motion Graphics, Video Editing and English Composition)  and two sit-ins (Life Drawing and Night Sessions) pretty much gave me a loaded schedule... it's fun though, but really tiring nonetheless.

I've increased my art sessions from two times a week to three--- I got to raise my traditional art A-game up and not to mention that I have to start getting used to digital stuff as well. The sad part about my curriculum is that the Advanced Life Drawing class is the last class that we can take as far as traditional art style goes. After that point, my subjects will mostly involve digital stuff all the way to graduation.

Well...

... it's been a damn while since my last post. A lot of things has happened then.

Despite saying I'm stoked about learning stuff from my last post, I kinda floundered on the last two weeks. I could've gotten an "A" in Anatomy but I wasn't able to finish the two projects which was worth 10 points, and did not complete the anatomy sketches (another 5 points) so I ended up with a "B" instead.

However, I did learn ALOT from my Anatomy class and I'm glad to say that I was able to keep up with the Wednesday night sessions as well. Felt like I level'd up just like in RPGs--- with being able to spend some points on "Anatomy", "Art History" and "Renders" (the traditional kind).

Oh yea, I decided to switch from Game Arts Design Major to Media Arts and Animation Major. Lots of people in my school thinks that I'm just trying to run away from one of my biggest weakness: 3d Digital Programs (yea, Maya).

I tried to be enthusiastic about learning this program but the more I learn about it, the more I feel... restricted. I dunno, maybe it's because it takes a LOT of patience learning about extrusions and all that stuff. I decided to take side lessons from this once school starts using Digital Tutors online. We'll see how it goes.

Here are some of the stuff that we drew from the last few weeks.

Need to learn further anatomy stuff. I'll eventually get the hang of this.

Since I'm getting my ass whupped in digital stuff, I decided to do something about it. I'll post it on my next blog post.

Haven't drawn anything since the last session. Just taking a one week break from it and then start practicing again next Monday.

I'm going to make some major purchases in the next few days. I actually had a dream that I ordered those damn things on Amazon which made me giddy for some reason. Then I woke up and checked my wishlist and it was still there. Haha.

Las Vegas Comic-Con!

Lasted for two days (Sept. 29 and 30) @ the Riviera Hotel. It was suppose to be in another place but the last heavy downpour that Las Vegas had pretty much ruined the supposedly convention area so it got moved two weeks before the convention day.

While that may have sucked, there are two things that was apparent: The organizers for this Con where on the ball--- they were on top of things (as long as it's in their reach) and the convention coordinators were efficient in dealing with any issue that came up during the con.

It was a medium-sized convention as far as attendees/vendors/artists were telling me (it's my first Comics Convention so I wouldn't know). Met some of my favorite artists (Adam Hughes and Iain McCaig)--- they were such nice people especially with Mr. McCaig once he found out I'm an Art Student trying to be a Concept Artist.

And then he said "and now I hereby announce you as a Concept Artist! now, start practicing on your sketchbook and build your portfolio from there! If there's another Comic Con here in Vegas, I will try to be here again and show me your progress!"

He added that he may not be good at faces but he knows names and the artwork associated with it... so I have to work harder in order to be more recognizable, heh.

I have to admit, I was awestruck and dumbfounded at the same time. He was so enthusiastic about it that it really got me stoked and more inspired in pursuing this field.

Me and Iain McCaig!
